It's headings like that in the church magazine that keep St George's Hartlepool in the news. Just before Christmas there was a prominent article in the Hartlepool Mail on their latest charity appeal for Africa, complete with photo of minister and elders and voluminous knickers - and then a couple of weeks later, there they were again in a round-up of the year feature.
But it was all in a good and serious cause of course. Back in the autumn Sylvie Grzelak from Australia had worshipped at St George's for a couple of Sundays, and had told the minister Val Towler about her present work at a mission post in northern Senegal. Even staple foods are scarce; and a modest gift from the church was more than gratefully received by Sylvie and turned into two large sacks of powdered milk for the village.
When Val asked if there was anything else they could do, she was told that there is a great need for 100% cotton underwear for babies, children - and large women! And once the appeal went out, the knickers just kept coming in....
