Visit to the Upper Room

table and bowl

Hannah Middleton tells of an event
at St John’s Church Kingston Park - 8th April 2006

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin.

Children, their parents and any interested church members were invited to come and explore more about the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples. This was aimed at our younger children who do not receive the communion elements yet, but are preparing themselves for sharing in the future.

Our visit to the ‘Upper room’ is the beginning of a journey for us all. As we unpack all the significance of Easter, and a meal that we remember Jesus sharing, as we continue to share bread and wine throughout our Christian lives.

We arrived in the ‘Upper room’ dressed as Jesus may have been. There was a special smell to the room as frankincense lingered. Jewish music played in the background this was a very different atmosphere to what normally greeted us in our church.

Foot washing was the first stage for those who wanted to try… and plenty did. What did it feel like to have your feet washed if you had travelled a hot and dusty road? What did it feel like serving others – crouched at the feet of those who had travelled?

We then sat very comfortably at floor level to listen and understand more of Jesus meal with his special friends, disciples - to understand why bread and wine are as important to us as today, as when Jesus shared them, to try and prepare his disciples for what was going to happen to him.

We rounded of our visit with some wonderful music that we sung and danced to before leaving the ‘Upper Room’.

As the children and their parents departed they took home a pack to help them think more about their visit, there were many questions asked, and a lot of conversations were still being shared the following day in church.
