Songs of Praise from Northumberland

St George's MorpethSt George's United Reformed Church, Morpeth and Ron Forster, its minister played a prominent part in the BBC Songs of Praise broadcast on Sunday May 18th.

As the church celebrated a weekend of special events under the title Through all the Changing Scenes of Life, the television programme focused on a journey through the county by Aled Jones in which the presenter learned of local heritage and traditions as seen particularly in the recent Morpeth Gathering.

St George's featured prominently through a thoughtful interview with Ron Forster and in a sequence in which he baptised baby Aydon Dixon, who will be known to many in our churches as the grandson of Carol and Donald Dixon. A number of URC members were also part of the Hexham Abbey congregation that led the hymn singing through the programme.

The final Northumbrian prayer was specially written for the occasion by St George's lay preacher Carol Dixon:-

Wor Fither God, ye encorcle us with your greet love,
through Jesus, wor mate and maister.

Wu thank ye for aall your goodness tiv us –
the baarry coonty in which wu live,
the delights of pipin’ an’ patterin’.

As membors of your family on orth,
keep us ivvor close by ee,.

May wu thrive in the Holy Spirit
and bring your gud news ti the world,
the day, the morn, and aalways.  Amen.

Our Father God, you encircle us with your great love,
through Jesus, our friend and master.

Thank you for all your goodness to us –
the beautiful county in which we live,
the delights of music making and talking with friends.

As members of your family on earth,
keep us ever close to you.

May we grow in the Holy Spirit
and bring your good news to our world,
today, tomorrow, and always.  Amen
