St Columba's hits a high note!Synod Children's Officer Hannah Middleton reports on a spectacular production
Children and children’s workers are once again leading the way in church and community engagement.
Over the first weekend in May St Columba’s Church North Shields staged the ‘Wizard of Oz’ which was a performance worthy of London’s West End. Not only did the children, some very young, remember all their lines and songs without a hint of nerves, but the adults from Junior Church who worked with them displayed a sense of calm enjoyment. The whole production which has given three performances was supported by an army of willing folk behind the scenes.
This enabled children and parents on the fringes of church to become involved, engaging in the church’s life as never before, offering their skills and gifts to ensure this production sparkled – and sparkle it did, with very technical lighting, wonderful costumes and props some of which were lent by other community groups. The newly refurbished premises lent themselves to transformation of seating and scenery very well: as some folk said, It is church, but not as you’d know it!
The strong sense of community and church fellowship became liquid as everyone entered the rainbow lounge decorated to support the theme, where refreshments were available. The smiles on the children’s faces beamed as just praise from parents, relations, church members, and invited guests such as myself applauded.
Thanks should go to many who I hope can now take a justly earned rest. And I hope the church can continue to develop the links forged within the community and with all who have given support. I look forward to the next production!
