ColumbaColumba - the Dove of Iona

The picture on the right is how the children of Whalton C of E First School Northumberland see the life and adventures of Columba, following a presentation by the members of St George's Morpeth of Columba - the Dove of Iona on July 7th.

The following week Rose Reeve's musical was presented as part of Sunday evening worship at Morpeth Methodist Church - and the next presentation is due on Sunday evening September 7th at St Andrew's Methodist/Uunited Reformed Church, Benton (just a day after the official reopening of their refurbished building).

And, Shirley Forster tells us, "we are still willing to take other bookings!"

Background to the Musical

Columba was a man of faith and action, and a man who learned from experience. A man who held political and religious power - in a time of warring dynasties, clashing cultures, and the propogation of a new religion, with many different understandings of what it mean to be a Christian.  He was a man who waged war to bend the world he knew to his beliefs.   Yet he came to realise the way to make Christ’s kingdom on earth was to forsake all those things which gave him temporal power, and  instead to live simply and humbly serving the people around him and sharing a gospel of love.

Presentation

Convinced that we live in similar times, when St George's Morpeth came to plan the ‘Through all the changing scenes of life’  event in May 2008, they turned again to Rose Reeve's musical "Columba". This provided the planning group with a music and drama  presentation that would involve a wide range of church folk, from the experienced to the beginner. It turned out to be a production that was open to all who wished to join in, that helped people to get to know one other, and that provided a shared worship experience.

Shirley Forster says "We would also be happy to be invited to present Columba at another church if anyone would like to use this as an evening service or as a fundraising event. We originally presented it as a morning service, but it's adaptable and requires no lighting or staging - just a space, and  a congregation or audience."
