Continuing Ministerial Education (EM3)


This page is principally for ministers in the Synod who are eligible for EM3 grants for continuing ministerial education - though others may well find the information of interest too.

Listed below is a selection of forthcoming courses that may attract EM3 grants.

For further details, click on the course where a link is provided. And follow the links were appropriate for other suggestions. If there is no link, contact the Education & Training Officer for details.

Ministers who have information about other courses and suggestions for other EM3 opportunities are invited to send these in.

"Inspire is a week long training event to help equip Church leaders for the reality of cooperating with the Holy Spirit in various aspects of ministry, including leading worship, discerning vision and engaging in pastoral care." Aug 30 - Sep 5 Believing in Britain at the Abbey Centre, Iona. Ian Bradley, minister, author and broadcaster, reflects on the overlapping spiritual identities which make up Britishness and the extent to which it provides a broad, hospitable, inclusive identity which can encompass both long-term inhabitants and more recent immigrants.

Reopening a Closed Book at the MacLeod Centre, Iona, with John Bell. A week of discovering new ways to read the Bible, reflect on the text, sing its major themes and find ways in which it can enable creative experiences of worship. 

Sep 29 - Oct 2 A Sceptic’s Gospel: a retreat for unconvinced believers - at Scargill House, with John Rackley. Why is certainty thought to be a sign of faith? Why do churches marginalise people who are honest about their doubts? Exploring these and other questions supported by the Bible’s devout sceptic: Qoheleth, author of Ecclesiastes.
Oct 7 - 9 URC Urban Training Forum 2008 at Nottingham ( staying at the Ibis Hotel). Host. Revd Tim Clarke and local colleagues. Cost £130.
Who is this for? - Anyone involved in urban ministry/mission, ordained and lay. Ecumenical colleagues are also welcome. Programme will include engaging with people in community and youth centres, sharing stories and biblical narratives /reflections, general reflection sessions relating to visits,and time and spaces to relax. Issues we will engage with include local social issues, regeneration in relation to housing estates in particular, inter-faith and multicultural issues. Oct 16-18 Free to Believe - URC's Open & Progressive Network's conference at Scargill House. Liberal Voices! Renewing Liberal Theology & Spirituality for the 21st Century - with Brian Wren and Ian Bradley.
Oct 18-24 Bread and Poetry at the Abbey Centre Iona -   a week making bread and poetry, with Helen Lambie, baker, and Joy Mead, poet.
