Ricatla is an ecumenical college for training ministers in Mozambique, providing a four year course for people from the whole of the country, both for men and women, singles and families. The church is growing and forms an essential part of the development of this stable but poor country.
Ricatla includes not only teaching facilities and student accommodation, but also a small hospital and a school.
They seek support in many ways and churches abroad have helped with buildings and some staffing costs.
In 2005 we ran an appeal throughout the Synod for good quality second hand books to send to to Ricatla. This was organised by West End minister John Young, pictured here collecting the books together in the church vestry. Now John writes:
The following letter has been received, dated 4th July 2005, from Revd Eugenio Tomas (Academic Dean) at the seminary:
“Greetings to you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
"I am writing to acknowledge that we received thirteen boxes with good theological books which you sent to the United Seminary of Ricatla, for library use. On behalf of the teachers, students and the entire Ricatla community, I want to thank you and the Reformed Church for being so kind to us. May the Lord bless you all.”
After paying all expenses, including transport and customs, the average price per book to Northern Synod was £1:50 and bearing in mind the cost of theological books seems good value.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed books.
There was quite a learning curve involved and I think that some of the contacts I made will make it possible to send any future consignment more cheaply.
John Young
We hope to send a further consignment of books some time in the future. Please hold on to any good theology books surplus to requirements, and look out for when we begin the next collection!
